“This sculpture contains a lot of what I’ve been working with throughout my career — techniques, symbols, colors, emotions. You can see it as a portal to the unknown, opening new possibilities. Or a ship that turned towards space, a vertical vessel. The staircase leads to new levels. If you want to, you can see it as if the scene is supervised by a higher power, with its head in gold.” Bertil Vallien's classic vertical vessel First Step in "Vallien blue" with a hand painted head in gold, is made at Kosta Glassworks in an edition of 300 pieces, signed by the artist.
