Kung Hei Fat Choy! – The Year of the Horse
Kung hei fat choy! Happy Chinese new year!
You might be a little superstitious, like me. (I was born during the Year of the Monkey.) Or maybe you’re not superstitious at all, in which case, you probably think those of us who are a little nutty. That’s fine. Keep reading anyway. At the very least, you’ll learn something new…
So, the Year of the Snake just ended and has issued in the Year of the Horse. <Somber music plays in the background>
Some background on the Chinese zodiac:
It is a calendar system that originated during the Han dynasty (206-220BC). Each of the years in its 12-year cycle is named for an animal: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog or pig, in that order. And these 12 animals interact with the 5 elements that make up the universe – earth, water, fire, wood and metal – and produces the specific character of the year ahead.
If you know anyone born in the year of the horse, they are said to be a bit like horses – animated, lively and effervescent! They enjoy running with the crowd. Just as foals learn to walk just minutes after being born, those born in the Year of the Horse are quick to learn independence and have a straightforward and positive attitude toward life. They are often known for their communication skills and for being witty.
As a tribute to the year of the horse, Swarovski has introduced a beautiful crystal Horse, Esperanza, which, in addition to the Chinese zodiac, is inspired by the wild Criollo horses of South America. This 2014 SCS Annual Edition gleams in clear crystal with a mane and tail in Crystal Satin. The base shines in Crystal Silver Shade. The name, Esperanza, means Hope in Spanish – not a bad namesake for those born in the year of the horse. (According to superstition, these high-energy, positive people are inclined to offend Tai Sui, the god of age, unless they wear something red to ward off the bad luck. Knock on wood?) Esperanza comes with a horseshoe-shaped title plaque engraved with “Esperanza SCS 2014” and the designer Anton Hirzinger’s signature.
If you were born in the Year of the Horse, you are in well-known company. Some famous fellow “horses” you might have heard of… Cindy Crawford, Louis Pasteur, Aretha Franklin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Neil Armstrong, to name just a couple… And if you’re not a horse, you are still cool, and there are still fun collectible Swarovski pieces that will show off your unique personality!
So cute! What animal are you?
